Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo while on a tour in Greenland, of the Scoresby Sound in the southeastern part of the country.

Time

this was taken in the middle of the day, which is usually not a good time for photography. It was a rainy, misty, foggy day that I think really brought out the colors with no blown out highlights.

Lighting

Sometimes, not the best weather conditions produce the best images--cloudy and rainy worked out great for this photo.

Equipment

I use a Sony A99II, and had my Tamron 28-300mm lens on it. We were very limited to the weight and luggage we could bring on this trip, and I find this to be a good all around lens. This was taken hand held, as to get to this location we had to leave our ship and be transported to land in a smaller zodiac, and taking a tripod along was just too inconvenient.

Inspiration

I had seen other photos taken by a friend of the tundra of Greenland, and this is what made me really want to go on this trip. As we were walking around in this beautiful place, it was almost hard to remember to push the shutter button rather than just stand there and say "OH WOW!" I was farther back and saw a person from our group up ahead near the water, and liked having someone there to give this amazing scene some perspective. Fall colors and icebergs--I felt this was a good combination!

Editing

The colors in this are so vibrant it almost looks like I did a lot of editing on it--but I really did not. I use Picassa for my post processing and did not do much to this image.

In my camera bag

When traveling I do take a second camera body with me, just in case my main one would have a problem. On this trip, where our bags were all weighed, I only brought along this 28-300 lens and another that is 16-50mm. In my bag is usually a polarizer, a 10 stop neutral density filter, and a split neutral density filter.

Feedback

This trip to Greenland was an amazing experience that I would recommend to everyone, but the ship only holds 12 passengers and is already booked full for the next 2 years! I think in Sept. when I was there would be the best time to go as the colors we saw were just spectacular.
