Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was made in "SMS cafe" — a very friendly place, where they tolerate photographers, running around with light and camera.

Time

It was morning, when sun just touched the roofs, and light was really soft...

Lighting

...I put my flash away and used the large window solo. It really made it.

Equipment

I had Nikon D810, Tamron 28-75/2.8, and one 400-w studio light (the name is forgotten).

Inspiration

Me an Olga are old friends, united by common inspiration and love for good photos. She is a makeup artist, but sometimes she poses to me as a model, so I try to never miss such a chance. This time we wanted to test my new D810 and a style she wanted to try on herself.

Editing

Some retouching in PS was done, but not much — Olga prefers natural colors and reliefs, and doesn't usually mind showing an occasional wrinkle. But this time light made most of retouching: it was so soft, the skin smoothed visibly.

In my camera bag

I try to keep to minimum weight, but usually have to be prepared to any surprises, so I take a Sony videolight, Nikon D810, Tamrons 28-75 and 75-200 (both /2.8), and a battery block.

Feedback

Pick your time wisely and investigate first. You have to make sure, that the location you choose will be available: know the schedule and the mood of the hosts. In some cafes you may not be treated nicely. Also know the sun: it's different in different seasons and times, so you have to plan the light accordingly. Well, and if you are shooting in some cafe, be polite and order a coffee — it makes personnell smoother and serves as props also :)
