Behind The Lens

Location

This beautiful photo was shot in the early morning hours on the Caney Fork River near Nashville, Tennessee.

Time

During the hot and humid summers here in the south the cold water released through the turbines at Centerhill dam creates this beautiful layer of mist/fog for a very brief time in the early morning hours. We were fly fishing with the Wounded Warriors program and I was waiting for just this opportunity to catch one of the veterans out on the water.

Lighting

The lighting is filtered sunlight through a fine layer of fog giving the photo the feeling of complete solitude with nature. The gentleman in the kayak was so absorbed in his surroundings that he was completely unaware that I was there. His family loved this photo of him on the water.

Equipment

I used a Canon 70D, hand held. Nothing fancy or special. Just me sitting on the bank waiting for some awesome photos.

Inspiration

We volunteer with this program every year. Every year I vow that I'm going to be ready when the fog hovers over the water. You have to be quick because it doesn't happen every day and not for very long. Fly fishing from a kayak is very peaceful and time slows down, providing a much needed peace for our soldiers coming back from a tour overseas.

Editing

Absolutely no post processing what so ever. What you see is exactly how it was in the moment.

In my camera bag

Once I started using a digital camera, my camera of choice has been Canon. I'm on my third upgrade. I recommend that you invest in top notch lenses if you can, but believe it or not, I've have taken some awesome photos with a kit lens.

Feedback

Patience. The majority of my photos are nature. I love natural lighting. Never leave your camera at home, you never know what opportunity will pop up.Speaking from experience, always make sure to have extra, charged batteries, Above all, enjoy yourself. Take photos that make you happy.
