The photo was taken at the Houston Zoo in Texas, USA.Time
It was afternoon in a very hot summer day. There were three rhinos under a tree trying to take advantage of the shade and the three seemed to be taken a nap. The one that is in the photo is the animal that was closest to me, the other two were behind him and partially cover by this one.Lighting
The day was bright a little bit cloudy with haze as it is common in the summer in Texas, I remember that I have to move around trying to have an even light on the subject since part of it was in the shadow and part to it under the sun. Fortunately I got a spot from I felt satisfied and started shooting. Fortunately the day was so hot that there were only few persons at the zoo that day, I cannot remember precisely but I am sure temperature was above 100 oF.Equipment
This photo was shot with my Canon 7D with my zoom lens 55-250 mm 1:4-5.6 IS EF-S, it allow me to get an almost blow-up of the face of the Rhino, I was trying to get its face and as much detail as possible of its skin. I did not use flash or tripod for this photo.Inspiration
I was trying to get photos of big animals at the zoo and I had in my mind the intention of later processing the photos to change the background, isolating them from the caged environment in which they live. I did the same with several animals and some of their photos are uploaded in my gallery in the ViewBug page.Editing
Yes, I did. I do not like to over edit the photos but I understand that it is always necessary to do that. I shoot RAW photos and they have to be edited to get whatever you want to express with the image that you obtain with the camera. For the edition I used ADOBE Photoshop which is my preferred software for editing. I converted the background with a method that I use with Photoshop with multiple layers and changing the the Hue/Saturation by different areas of the photo. It is a very large process but I enjoyed doing this way.In my camera bag
I have a Canon 7D that is soon to be 11 years old. I have the a zoom lens 28-135 mm 1:3.5-5.6 EF IS lens, I also have in my bag a 18-55 mm 1:3.5-5.6 IS II lens and a 55-250 mm 1:4-5.6 IS EF-S., Canon Remote Control, extra batteries, CF cards, extension tubes and an adapter for the 28-135 mm lens to invert it and use it as a macro lens that I am still trying to dominate. I have several tripods, one monopod and many filters.Feedback
My personal advice for any person trying to take wild life photos is to never put aside a trip to the zoo. There you can take photos of animals that otherwise you may never see in real life. If you want to take good photos at the zoo go there with plenty time because normally the crow there is to interfere with the shooting and you may have to wait until your opportunity comes. Also you may have to take time moving around until you can get a straight shot without cages or objects in the way and the animals are not always so keen to pose or do whatever you like. And the last thing do not go to take photos at the zoo if it is very hot, most animals would prefer to stay out of the sight taking advantage of the shade or the cover from the sun. I learn this that day.
