Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Dubai. This is one of the most iconic views that Dubai has to offer and it didn't disappoint when I saw it in person.

Time

This was one location that was on my bucket list for places to visit in Dubai. I made sure to get the required approval well before my visit so that I had no problems when I actually got there. I reached the location around 5:30 PM. It was a very hot and humid evening and there was a lot of haze as well. Half the time I felt like I would collapse from the heat but when I look back now, all of the hardships I faced that day were worth it.

Lighting

I wanted to capture the city lights with the start of blue hour. I had to take multiple shots at certain intervals to get the blend of colours and lighting I imagined when I was planning the shot.

Equipment

I took this shot using my Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 lens attached to a Nikon D7200. The camera was mounted on a Tripod since I had to take multiple long exposure shots.

Inspiration

Dubai has a lot of iconic views for photographers. When I planned my visit to Dubai, I made sure to get access to as many of them as possible, with this location being near the top of my list. Seeing the view in person was great, and I wanted to capture everything I saw. The fading sunlight and the start of the blue hour, combined with the city slowly lighting up was what I wanted to capture and I managed to accomplish that.

Editing

As mentioned above, there was a lot of haze so a lot of the colours were dull and washed out. I had to make adjustments so that the proper details were extracted from the Raw images. I took several long exposure shots at several intervals to cater for the lighting conditions, so in post processing, I had to combine all those shots to get the final image.

In my camera bag

I like to be prepared for several different photographic opportunities at all times. Keeping that in mind, I start off with putting in my Tamron 15-30 f2.8 lens. This allows me to shoot the sunsets, and other landscape/cityscape shots. I also enjoy shooting wild birds, so for that I also keep a Nikon 200-500 f5.6 lens handy, and whenever the opportunity comes along to shoot portraits, I keep a Nikon 50mm f1.8 and a Godox TT685 flashgun in my bag as well. Last but not the least is my trusty Nikon D7200.

Feedback

I haven't had the opportunity to buy any filters for my Tamron lens, so I had to make do with multiple exposures, so if you're planning to capture something similar, get an ND filter, it would definitely reduce the post processing time. Get proper permissions and approvals before going to any locations you plan to shoot from. I did that, and the staff was extremely cooperative and accommodating when I showed up for the shoot.
