Behind The Lens

Location

I took this shot on an office trip. I am an aspiring nature photographer, so I'm always on the look out for my next great image!

Time

I was pretty excited to go on this trip, since living in a heavily polluted city, this visit to a remote location was the perfect way to relax. We left at around 6 in the morning and reached our destination around noon. I took this shot a couple hours later during the mid autumn sunlight.

Lighting

Since this shot was taken around 2 in the afternoon, the lighting was pretty harsh overall, but fortunately, this flower was in a relatvely shaded area, so I was able to get a naturally dark background with the flower and the butterfly under the strong sunlight.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D850 with a 200-500mm lens to take this shot. It was taken handheld and no other equipment was used.

Inspiration

I had seen similar shots from various other photographers and I always wanted to give it a try. The amazing thing about this picture is that, once you zoom in, you can see the pollen on the butterfly's tongue!

Editing

I only fixed the highlights and added more contrast to the background so that it appeared more dark.

In my camera bag

I always have my D850 on hand since you never know when nature decides to reward you. As for the lenses, I usually have the Tamron 15-30mm lens for cityscapes, the Nikon 50mm for the occasional portraits and the Nikon 200-500mm for any wildlife I shoot. I recently added a Nikon 80-200mm to my arsenal, so I hope to capture a more diverse variety of subjects with this amazing lens.

Feedback

Practice makes perfect! The D850 is a very unforgiving camera. You have to be perfect with your technique to get the shots you want, but once you do, then it rewards you very well for all the effort.
