I took this shot from my rooftop. The tree was a bit far from my house and I had to use a telephoto lens to get the frame I wanted.Time
I always make it a point to shoot the sunset on weekends since you never know when nature decides to reward you! I remember being a bit disappointed that there weren't any clouds that day and was planning to go back inside when I noticed the sun going down right behind this tree. The moment I took the picture, I knew that I got that reward from nature. This picture was taken a few minutes before sunset.Lighting
I wanted the tree to properly frame the sun and the sun to appear slightly over exposed. Since I was shooting into the sun, I had to be careful not to under expose the tree since that would cause problems during post processing. A couple of test shots later I had the exposure I wanted. It had a smooth orange tone with the tree making the perfect silhouette.Equipment
This was shot on a Nikon D7200, with a 55-300mm lens. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
I wanted to shoot an image that would look good as a book cover. When I saw the scene I immediately knew that an image of this moment would look good as a cover of a fantasy thriller novel!Editing
Since I managed to nail the exposure, I mostly just had to fix the saturation and contrast to get the colour tones I wanted. I also cropped the image a bit from the bottom.In my camera bag
I always make sure to pack in my trusty 15-30mm f2.8 lens. You never know when you need to shoot wide and this way, if I notice a particularly awesome landscape, I'll immediately be able to change lenses and take the shot. I also have my 200-500mm lens almost always attached to my Nikon D850. This is one versatile lens and I've used it to shoot anything and everything from cats to trees to even planets!Feedback
Always keep your camera with you and keep shooting. This will allow you to get the exposure correct much more quickly since you'll already be familiar with your camera and you will instinctively know what settings to use. For this shot, I only had a couple of tries before the sun would have moved from this spot and I wouldn't have been able to capture this frame if I had to fumble around with the aperture and shutter speed etc.
