Called a century plant due to the many years between sprouting and actually growing this huge stalk of blooms, they don't really take 100 years. Generally, it takes about 35 years for the plant to bloom, only once. The blooms seem to last for weeks, maybe a couple of months, then the plant slowly dies away completely. But new ones tend to sprout around the base soon after.
