Behind The Lens

Location

Near a small pond. I was hoping a dragonfly would land on one of the lillies, but on this stick was ok too.

Time

I shot it around 2 in the afternoon.

Lighting

The sun is off to the right in the photo. The pose is called 'oblisking' The dragonfly sometimes does this to keep cool.

Equipment

Nikon D850, Nikkor 500mm FL and a1.4 extender. Hand held @ f/8 1/800 sec. iso220 (on auto ISO) I find this combination hard to beat for an all purpose, bird to dragonfly, photo tool. Normally I shoot as wide open as possible. Somehow I was a stop down for this shot.

Inspiration

I have been collecting shots of all the odonata in the area.

Editing

Very little in Lightroom, mainly cropping and color balance.

In my camera bag

Usually just what I carry attached to the camera. Either the 500FL, a nikkor micro 200mm, Nikkor 105 micro, and or a 1.4 extender and either a Nikon D850, 750, or my wife's D7200.

Feedback

It's hard to get close to these when they are in a wet, muddy, place. Use a telephoto at an open f/stop to blur the background. This really helps to isolate the subject.
