Location
We invited some friends over to our house in the country to view the eclipse from our front yard. Conditions were perfect and it was a lot of fun.Time
This image was taken at just a moment past totality at 10:24am. near McMinnville, Oregon.Lighting
Lighting? I broke all the rules and shot directly into the sun without a filter. :-) Just kidding although it's true. Actually, I had exposed for totality, and when the sun emerged I continued shooting. I didn't change anything.Equipment
My wife's D7200, Nikkor 500mm FL, Nikon AF-S TC-14E III 1.4x teleconverter, and a Manfrotto 055 tripod with a Nest gimbal head.Inspiration
I hadn't really planned on taking photos because I figured there would be an abundance of eclipse photos from folks that knew what they were doing better than I. However, after the tripods were being brought out I joined in. I didn't have a filter, so I planned on just shooting the totality stage. At totality, I set the camera up on manual, 1/15sec, f5.6 and ISO200 mainly because it seemed to be about right. On reflection, I probably should have upped the ISO and the shutter speed. Of course I had left the remote trigger in the house and didn't have time to get it as this only lasted a little over a minute. All but a couple of captures showed movement because I also neglected to lock the mirror up or set a delay.Editing
I just moved the sliders in Lightroom until the image looked pleasing. The colored flare was a lucky result. In my camera bag
Normally I carry my D750 with a Nikkor micro 105mm macro lens, but I also have a Nikkor 200mm macro that I really like. I have recently also been going to the other extreme from wide angle to telephoto. My D750 was still in the shop at this time for recall work. If I can give Nikon a plug, they essentially rebuilt my camera to new condition with a new shutter and many other parts, in spite of the fact that it seemed to work perfectly well and I waited a long time to send it in. All this with no charge. Outstanding service!Feedback
Plan to be out in the open and in the right spot for the next eclipse in 2024. Plan ahead to minimize camera movement and do some dry runs. You will only have a minute to make it work. I was lucky! Although I didn't win any of the Viewbug contests I entered, I was pleased to win a challenge even though there were only six or seven entries. All the later positive feedback made it all worth while.
