Behind The Lens

Location

I took this image in a place that I often shoot and refer to as my “outdoor studio”. It’s a small area just outside my studio where I can photograph clients to get this landscape look.

Time

This wasn’t shot at golden hour. It was most likely shot at around 5 pm in the summer when the sun is still pretty high in Kansas.

Lighting

I am really lucky because the “outdoor studio” is in open shade. So even with the sun being high, I can get softer fill light on the face and a hint of kicker light from the sun. I didn’t even use a strobe on this one.

Equipment

I use an 85mm 1.2 for most of my portraits. I use Canon and shot with my Ds. And I only used a reflector for fill light. Subject at a 45 degrees to the sun.

Inspiration

This was a senior client. She supplied the dress. I was so excited to photograph her in this outfit. Just a lovely girl to photograph.

Editing

Not much in post production. Just adjust color balance, contrast, vibrancy and clarity. And fix fly away hairs. Those I find super annoying.

In my camera bag

Canon Ds 85mm 1.2 70-100mm 2.8 when I need it and a 24-105mm on a rare occasion. I use GoDox 600’s often for fill light and always have a large scrim and reflector with me too.

Feedback

Look for open shade. There are beautiful small spaces all around us. You just have to look for them. Don’t forget something for fill light and you’ll have beautiful catch lights at the same time!
