Behind The Lens

Location

In Italy, between Lombardy and Piedmont: lake of Orta, the island of San Giulio seen from Orta San Giulio.

Time

Spring, just before sunset. Backlit with the sun that makes the lake water a white mirror.

Lighting

Backlight: the sun reflects on the water of the lake. I chose to hide the direct sun behind the tree branches. I used the trunk to create a natural frame.

Equipment

Freehand: Canon EOS 7D Mark II width Canon EF 28-70mm f1:2.8 L USM

Inspiration

The photo was inspired by the natural frame created by the tree on the right and above and by the boats on the shore below, which enhance the central subject of the island's houses in the middle of the lake. The sailor who looks at the sun adds a human element to the photo.

Editing

Only a slight use of the Photoshop HDR function to increase the details of the houses in the center of the photo.

In my camera bag

I currently have three "little girls" so I call the cameras: For serious jobs: Canon EOS 7D Mark II; Canon EF 70-200mm f1:4 L USM (Very fast in the focus and very sharp); Canon EF 28-70mm f1:2.8 L USM (my favorite MY 2000 (!!)); Canon EF 17-40mm F1:4 L USM; Canon Speedlite 430EX (I do not like to use the flash); Giottos tripod MH-1003 (with his bag, compact and light); Lowepro Computrekker AW; Lowepro EX180 (very compact but very strong) and new Lowepro Fastpack BP 250 AW II. For backup: a body Canon EOS 40D and Canon EOS 300D Digital with standard lens 18-55. My phone is a Samsung SM-G960F.

Feedback

To focus on subjects on different planes it is necessary to use rather closed diaphragm values like f / 8. Choose a spot metering system for exposure preferring details in shadow, leaving the reflection on the water overexposed.
