Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Valencia, in the "Ciutat de los Artes y las Ciencias" City of Art and Science, designed by the architects Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela.

Time

The photo was taken just before the sunrise that can be seen in the "tail" of the fish.

Lighting

The lights just before dawn are insidious: in this case it was necessary to be fast, to anticipate the rising of the sun that would put the details in backlight, but at the same time with a steady hand because the low light required a slow exposure time.

Equipment

Canon EOS 40D; Canon EF 17-40 f1:4 L USM, without flash, without tripod.

Inspiration

The inspiration for the shot was born almost by chance, capturing the symmetric reflection in the water that created a "fish" shape by composing different architectural structures.

Editing

With the use of PhotoShop I slightly increased "saturation" and "vividness" to revive the too pastel colors of the lights before dawn. A slight touch up even to the "contrast" increased by a few points. I could have eliminated the upper left part of the bridge above, because, perhaps, it creates a too dark area in the upper part of the photo, but after making several attempts I preferred to leave it, as it was originally.

In my camera bag

I currently have three "little girls" so I call the cameras: For serious jobs: Canon EOS 7D Mark II; Canon EF 70-200mm f1:4 L USM (Very fast in the focus and very sharp); Canon EF 28-70mm f1:2.8 L USM (the one I'm most fond of: MY 2000 (!!)); Canon EF 17-40mm F1:4 L USM; Canon Speedlite 430EX (I don't like to use the flash); Giottos tripod MH-1003 (with his bag, compact and light); New Lowepro Fastpack BP 250 AW II perfect for flying, the older Lowepro Computrekker AW; Lowepro EX180 (very compact but very strong). For backup: a body Canon EOS 40D (with a new sensor and a new shutter); and Canon EOS 300D Digital with standard lens 18-55.

Feedback

I believe that often a good photo should be "seen" even before the actual shot. The beautiful photo is not only seen but "felt" with the heart even before with eyes. it is a question of sensitivity.
