This photo of Sirah (@riosirah) was snapped at a photography meet up, in downtown Los Angeles, hosted by @StreetmeetLA.Time
I took this during blue hour in downtown LA.Lighting
As a candid shot I didn’t have much to do with the lighting, as it was naturally lit.Equipment
This was shot handheld on a Sony A7Sii with an 85mm Sigma art lens.Inspiration
Sirah was painting a body art piece on Davavic “Kooki” (@danavic_) when I caught a glimpse of the paint on his hand. A painters hands hold magic in them and to be able to capture a beautifully self-painted hand just felt right.Editing
For this image in particular I didn’t want to do much with post processing. I tweaked a custom preset I made to add some warmer tone to his skin.In my camera bag
I carry a Wndrd PRVKE 21 backpack, in which I have my Sony A7Sii, two to three lenses (wide-medium-telephoto), at least one GoPro with a headmount and a mouth guard mount, for extra realistic POV adventure shots. I explore abandoned buildings when I’m not freelancing and first person POV seems to be a favorite in that genre of film, if you will. That coupled with the cinematics of the Sony make for quite exciting and artistic videos. I also carry my Mavic Pro drone, which folds up nicely, a first aid kit, because I’m accident prone, water, my laptop if I’m travelling, and my tripod, if needed. Loveeee my bag and even made a review video for it: https://youtu.be/WHEng_m4tg8Feedback
When shooting candid shots you have to remember, surprisingly, to relax and not focus on getting a beautifully composed shot. The composition will reveal itself once your eye catches the first few seconds before the “perfect moment.” This way, when the candid moment happens you will be able to compose and capture it beautifully. It’s easier said than done, but shooting candid shots becomes almost second nature after doing it for awhile. I love me a good candid shot!
