Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken late June 2017 from the Presidio of San Francisco. I was riding bicycles with my family and without my trusty Canon 5d I had to rely on my iPhone 6 to grab this line up of weathered waves and wetsuits.

Time

The shot was taken late morning...just before midday. I love the colour of the rusted links and the rusty red of the bridge and the contrasting blue of the sky against the waters green.

Lighting

Midday, dappled cloud.

Equipment

This was an impromptu iPhone 6 snap

Inspiration

Iconic opportunity whilst travelling with my family.

Editing

I tightened the white balance and reduced the exposure whilst gaining some definition through the standard iPhone edit function to bring the rusty links to lifelike texture.

In my camera bag

I usually travel with a 5d and 90d body. A prime EF 50mm F1.8 STM Lens for portraits, EFS 18-55mm f/4-5.6mm STM and Canon EF 70-300mm f4-5.6 Lens's for general work and a TS-E 24mm f3.5 L II for architectural shots. Having an iPhone on hand allows for impromptu grabs when they arise.

Feedback

As one of the most photographed images of San Francisco finding the right place to capture the Golden Gate bridge probably isn't difficult but he beauty of this shot is in the layers to the picture. The height of the bridge, the gnarly texture of the linked chain was all brought into context by adding the action of the surfer hitting that little point break. Usually I'll sit for hours to get a good surfer shot, this one took less than a minute to present itself.
