Behind The Lens

Location

Photo was taken from Burleigh heads looking north to Surfers Paradise. I was slowly making my way down south from 3am waiting for a sunrise to do some shots.

Time

This is probably one of my Favorited photos of the Gold Coast. Woke around 2 am was a little foggy outside and decided on the spur of the moment to head south and capture the lights of surfers paradise from different angles. It was one of the coldest mornings I could remember and doing everything I could to try and stop trembling from the cold. Watching both the waves, the surfers and the sunrise was a mesmerizing experience with the sounds, sites and colours.

Lighting

I wanted the Image to look like the city was floating on water. Didn't quite achieve that but I am still impressed with the final image. With the fog lifting and the sun rising made for some interesting colours.

Equipment

The photo was shot with an Olympus omd em-5 MK II 1/500 sec. f/4.8. 75 mm Lens was a, Olympus M.zuiko ED 75–300 mm f4.8 –6.7 II Lens, hand held.

Inspiration

I was looking to shoot different angles of Surfers Paradise early in the morning as I have never seen to many morning shots of this area. The surfboard riders were an added bonus, as well as the sunrise colours which I think really makes the shot. I guess this is why they call it Surfers Paradise.

Editing

I always shoot in RAW, the colours were a little flat so I used lightroom to adjust the Tone and process the shot through Google Nik high definition to bring out the sunshine more.

In my camera bag

Olympus em5 MKII M.Zuiko 45mm, 60mm Macro, 12-40mm and 75-300mm. Tripod, filters. Cable release, A Flash that is rarely used

Feedback

Be prepared for anything, all types of Weather. The diversity of colours and situations. I've always believed to plan ahead for each trip as its amazing how the weather and light can change your ideas on the move. However, this one time was a spur of a moment trip. Don’t be afraid to move to a different location for a different angle of the same shoot, when doing landscape photography, as it could mean the difference between a good shot and a great shot
