Behind The Lens

Location

Photo taken in Tijuca national park in Brazil. Tucan sitting in the sun and fixing its feathers keeping an eye on me and listening to what i'm saying. I talk to get the bird to tilt the head in the right direction.

Time

I was in Tijuca from the morning but this picture was taken in the middle of the day and i photoed a couple of different birds using strong underexposure and this is my favorite picture from that day.

Lighting

Strong sunlight so I changed my settings on the camera to very high underexposure to make the surroundings dissiperar and only get the bird in the picture.

Equipment

I used my Canon 7D mark II with Canon EF 100-400/4,5-5,6 L IS II USM lens.

Inspiration

When i saw the opportunity the strong sun was giving me i took several photos using the reflektion from the sun as light. I often use the sun to light subjects in my pictures giving them a more grammatical look.

Editing

It came out from the camera pretty much as i wanted it. The thing i did in post was making the black even stronger and ad some contrast.

In my camera bag

I usually have two cameras with me one with my favorite lens canon Canon EF 100-400/4,5-5,6 L IS II USM and one with Canon EF 24-105/4,0 L IS II USM in that way i come prepared for motives that are close or far away. I also have extra memory cards, batteries and a light wight tripod.

Feedback

The key to this type of photo is to have the subject in strong sunlight and underexpose a lot. Another tip when you photographing birds is to talk to them to get them to change their head in different angels until you got it as you like it(birds move their head when listening to what you say).
