I’ve seen so many posts of Pragser Wildsee or Lago di Braies, that I just had to go shoot at this iconic- picture-perfect location. As expected; we reached to find a couple of photographers already there (no surprise) & disappointingly, the door

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Pragser Wildsee in the Italian Dolomites - a truly blessed region of the Tirol Region. Owing to it’s unparalleled popularity, it’s jokingly known as the ‘Instagram Lake’. Infact, that’s what drew me to it in the first place.. I’ve ofcourse ended up visiting a number of times since.. and am sure to again too!

Time

The best time to shoot here is at Sunrise when the mountain is lit up & then reflected onto the calm, clear waters of the lake.

Lighting

The lights gorgeous at sunrise, but the struggles to get the exposure right while shooting the stark contrasting light of the sunkissed limestone mountain against the lake.

Equipment

I used bracketed exposure for this on my Nikkor 24-120mm lens.

Inspiration

I’d see so many posts from here that when we did manage to holiday in the Tirol Region; this was No.1 on my list of must-visit spots. Truly breathtaking!

Editing

Inspite of bracketing my exposures, I still used a gradient filter on the mountain to get more detail on it - as against being fairly blown out (though, that isn’t such a bad picture either).

In my camera bag

I normally have a 24-120mm, 55-300mm & 14mm in my bag.. though the first is what I use for 90% of my pictures. On planned photo-trips I also carry along my DJI Spark drone & my Sirui Waterproof Tripod (it’s heavier than I’d prefer, but gives me the option to go into water too).

Feedback

Go early to catch the sunrise, you’ll be sure the meet a few photographers too but it’s the best time to shoot here. Stick around for the boathouse to open a little later, you could grab a bit to eat or coffee at the hotels restaurant which is right at the lake.
