Along the way from Sotol Vista to Castolon Visitor's Center on the Ross Maxwell Scenic View drive, there are a few hillocks that are obviously volcanic in nature. Some folks argue the structures that stand like this are petrified trees. My view, based on what I do know of geology, is that these are most likely volcanic fumarole vents that are 'left behind' after the process of erosion has withered away the softer ground from which they arose as lava tubes.
