Come on, you know what a loufa is -- those backscrubber sponge things you use in the shower! Right, I thought they were underwater sponges, too, but no. Plants. On land. Their blossoms are big, yellow and intricately veined, textured and -- if you look closely -- hairy!

I caught this one with a dash of sun right on the center of the flower, got as close as I could and played with light a bit. Then snapped this. That's the stamen-pistil (antherium) in the sun's spotlight there.

Sorry for the lateness of a reply, onyanita! My VB messaging was kind of messed up for a while and I didn't know you commented until today when I was checking out my contest rankings. Thanks for the kindly response! I love the way this flower's textures and veins create all these textural colorations. My eyesight isn't quite what it used to be so I can hardly tell exactly what the image is going to look like without a computer screen and my reading glasses. I was very happy to see how this one turned out.
