Location
This photo was taken in a city park in Seattle. This part of the park is along a heavily wooded ravine. The event was a surprise wedding proposal. Spoiler, she said Yes!Time
It was early afternoon but we were in a heavily wooded section of the park and the foliage muted and filtered the sunlight.Lighting
The sunlight was filtered by the tree canopy which gave me a soft light that I felt fit the mood. I added some fill with an off camera speed light and defuser.Equipment
My equipment was stripped down as I needed to be flexible for a live unscripted event. I used a Canon 50D with a EF50mm f/1.4 USM with a Blackstrap RS-4 Classic Retro Camera Sling and a 580 EX II mounted on a light stand with a softbox and controlled with a Yongnuo YN-622C Wireless ETTL Flash Trigger.Inspiration
The inspiration belongs to Taylor and Starlin! My portrait shooting style is to allow the subject interact with minimal input from me. I look for those meaningful personal moments that you can't script. In this instance I stepped back so they could experience and enjoy this special moment in time. My role was to observe and document. As you can see they gave me a lot to work with and I just needed to be ready.Editing
Just some basic adjustments in Lightroom with some level adjustments, a soft vignette and B&W conversion in Photoshop. In my camera bag
For a shoot like this I have two bodies, a Canon 50D and a 60D. Several lenses depending on needs but including a Canon 50mm F1.4 an EF 24–105mm f/3.5–5.6 IS STM an EF 70-200mm f/4L USM and a Tamron SP 90mm F/2.8 Di MACRO 1:1. One to three Canon 580 EX II speedlights with soft boxes and light stands. An ExpoDisc Neutral White Balance Filter a couple Blackstrap camera slingsFeedback
For personal and/or intimate portraits the most important point is to be ready. Have your gear setup and flexible so that when your client give you a moment like this you're ready and able to capture the moment. The flexibility of multiple camera bodies with different type lenses is great. An assistant that can move your lighting rig is very helpful. As I said I don't do much posing so I'm looking for a natural rhythm between my clients. I'm looking for their smiles not just a smile. I'm looking for the way they look at each other. In that brief moment when I see eyes light up with feelings and emotion I want to be ready.
