Location
I was at the Tulip Festival in Mount Vernon Wa and this shot was taken at the RoozenGaarde Tulip Farm. You can see the main tulip fields in the background. The fence surrounded a small garden area that I found very inviting given the different textures and the earthy tones that framed the bright flowers.Time
It was around noon.Lighting
Shooting outdoors you have to deal with the ambient light which can be a challenge sometimes but in this case the lighting wasn't too bad. This area was shaded by several evergreens on the other side of the fence that softened the lighting.Equipment
This was a handheld shot with a Tamron 90mm f/2.8 mounted on a Canon 50D (1/200, f3.5 and ISO 100).Inspiration
When you're walking around a Tulip Festival there's no lack of inspiration. The biggest task for me was finding interesting ways to frame shots. For this I knelt down to get a low angle that accentuated the fence line while adding in color to the fore and background.Editing
I processed this shot in Lightroom. I calibrate the white balance in camera for each shoot so all I had to do was tweak the highlights and shadows to bring out the details. In my camera bag
I carry with me a camera body (Canon 50D & 60D) a Canon 50mm f1.2, Tamron 90mm f2.8, and Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS. I have other lenses but these are my normal carry. I also carry a Speedlight 580ex ii with reflectors in case I need some fill light. An ExpoDisc to calibrate the white balance and memory cardsFeedback
There wasn't anything tricky about this shot. For me the key was finding the right spot and shooting angle so I can frame the shot. For flowers I like low angles. For this scene I looked at the various lines and positioned myself so the fence line dropped off slightly and focused on a spot slightly right of center. The shallow depth of field worked well with smoothing the colors in the fore and background which frame the fence This is a style I find pleasing. Everyone has a look they prefer so the best advice I can offer is to shoot a lot and look for a style you like.
