Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at 6am in the morning, on the lovely Wexford coast in Courtown near my home

Time

It was one of those mornings you plan to get up early for the chance of a nice sunrise, so I was up about 5am, gear packed the night before of coarse.

Lighting

The lighting was not really looking great when I chose the composition but I sat on the beach with a mug of coffee and waited, glad I did, it is one of my favourite sunrise shots

Equipment

Camera was Nikon D5300, manfrotto tripod, I also used Lee filters, 105mm circular polariser filter, Lee 0.6 soft edge graduated filter, the len was Sigma 17-50mm 2.8

Inspiration

Love movement in water so I knew the shot would be a long exposure type shot. Seascapes are lovely to look at and most people that have seen this image comment on it.

Editing

Post processing was simple enough, dropped some highlights and brought up some shadows in lightroom. I used a graduated filter to drop some exposure in th sky to even up the scene. Then in Photoshop I used a inverted curves layer and painted in some highlights and shadows the waves, sharpened some areas locally and that was it really. I don't go mad on edits, if I cant get the image to look the was I saw it then I will walk away for a couple of hours and then have another go. I normally try to get as much as I can in camera.

In my camera bag

Nikon camera, sigma 17mm-50mm f2.8 and Tamron 45mm f1.8 lens, Lee filters 105mm circular polariser, Lee filters 0.6 soft edge grad filter, and Manfrotto tripod. I also use Colour Checker Passport at the start of every shoot, helps to get the colours just right

Feedback

Go out and try it its not that hard, once you get the hang of getting the exposure time right, for the movement in the water then its just your composition you need to get right. You will find yourself taking many shots of the same composition but at various shutter speeds and you will get the shot.
