A lucky moment in time, capturing a reflected child's image which did not look like the actual child herself - and this was one storey up in a house, so it was not another child at all outside looking in. I felt it was a spiritual connection.

Behind The Lens

Location

I was having fun taking spur-of-the-moment photos of my friend's grand-daughter, Rosie. It was in my friend's home lounge area, one floor above ground. I was trying to capture the child's moods and ever-changing facial expressions of this usually sombre girl.

Time

The photo was taken around lunchtime (between about 12noon and 1pm).

Lighting

it was natural light coming in the window, without the glare of the sun.

Equipment

Canon 77D camera. Tamron 18-400mm lens - so I could get close up shots when I wanted or encompassing distance shots if Rosie was in another room dancing, as she did with her mother and grandmother.

Inspiration

I originally took baby photos when Rosie was about 6 months old and when I knew she was visiting her grandmother again, I asked if I could come along and do more shots - yes I was told happily - YAY!!! It was fun. Letting Rosie get used to me snapping pictures while I was smiling, and not "getting in her face" with my camera, letting her approach me at her pace was good as she lightened up in her mood and enjoyed having the photos taken. I loved capturing spontaneous moments of laughter and the very special moments such as the reflected self images - which didn't really look like her but like another child looking back at her...maybe an imaginary friend who was captured in the window glass.

Editing

All I did with the photo was crop it - that was all - nothing else was needed I believed.

In my camera bag

I have 2 camera bodies (Canon 600D as my original DSLR and now used as a spare back-up camera) - and my few months old Canon 77D camera and Tamron 18-400mm lens. I also have the 2 kit lens for the Canon 600D camera, as well as a Tamron wide angle lens and a fisheye lens, and filters, and a glass ball to practice with.

Feedback

Be spontaneous - I don't like posed images of people - they are too stilted and boring. I love to capture 'the moment" as it happens - maybe it may take an hour to get it or longer - or if you're lucky it may happen quickly. I've shot 5 wedding photos now, and I am still believing the impromptu shots are the best, even of the bride in my last shoot climbing a tree in her wedding dress and her groom then catching her in his arms as she descended from the branch - such love in their faces.
