Location
My interest began with observing the natural world, specifically birds before photography began to captivate me. This image was captured during an early evening walk with my wife, Maria, near a pond at McKee-Beshers Wildlife Management Area in suburban Maryland about 25 miles northwest of Washington, DC.Time
This is one of the first bird pictures that I took in the wild that I really liked. Until this late evening walk I had never even seen a Prothonotary Warbler outside of a guidebook.Lighting
As it turned out I was paying attention to finding birds in and around the trees near a large group of ponds. The light was of secondary concern. With birding you largely need to take what you get. The Sun was due to set within a couple of hours from behind the golden colored warbler. It suddenly appeared on the dried reeds in front of a stand of trees, not close enough to shade the bird. It began to sing as I snapped a couple of shots of which this image turned out to be the best. I felt fortunate to capture it while sending a song skyward.Equipment
I had a Canon SX50 in hand.Inspiration
When I am outdoors with a camera in hand, I am always inspired, constantly searching quietly for a bird, animal, insect or plant.Editing
This photo was taken in jpg format. I adjusted for light exposure and contrast then cropped for best affect. In my camera bag
At the time that I captured this image, I had a Canon SX50. Since then I have become accustomed to carrying one or both of the following: A Nikon D750 and a Nikon D500. One equipped with a Nikkor 200 - 500mm, the other with a Nikkor 105mm micro lens or a 40 - 120mm zoom.Feedback
If you are interested in nature photography, learn about your intended quarry. Get to know their habits at various times of day and at various seasons of the year. Get to know their habitats and feeding preferences. Learn when and where they nest and mate. Remember most animals are on the lookout for predators. Proceed quietly and with patience. Calm your impulse to grab quick shots. Try to avoid facing your intended subject. Present your profile to the bird or animal. Do not stare. Learn to see without looking directly at the object of your attention. By all means move slowly. Don't be greedy. Let the images come to you. With patience and respect you will be rewarded
