Behind The Lens

Location

We were on an outing, driving about and enjoying the Addo Elephant Park when a herd of elephants passed closeby our vehicle.

Time

It was a cold, wintery afternoon and we'd come from the Park's picinic place.

Lighting

It was a spur of the moment capture, the sun hidden behind a thin cloud cover, making for a perfect reflektor.

Equipment

I used a Canon Rebelxs with a 50mm lens.

Inspiration

My family enjoys watching and observing wildlife, so when the herd passed by, I had to capture the moment, as it was our first occurence with elephants this close. And I'd always desired to capture a closeup of a wild animal's facial features. It's where their character is best portrayed.

Editing

I use adobe lightroom where editing raw photos are a blast. It's all about keeping what you saw in mind when editing the images. To keep true to its color and ambiance, then bring out the best in the photo. This one called for a dramatic black and white, especially to make those wrinkles and lines showcase the elephant's wisdom in age.

In my camera bag

I always have my Canon handy when we do trips like these. And my smartphone.

Feedback

When it comes to wildlife, sometimes you need to work to find those amazing shots, and then at times, they come to you. Be patient and don't forget to enjoy the moment.
