This squirrel played hide and seek with me by going around and around the tree, but finally let me get this shot.

Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in the Lee Metcalf Game Range just outside of Stevensville, Mt.

Time

I had been in the game range for about 2 hours when I noticed the Red Squirrel. It must have been at least eleven in the morning by then. Lots of Ponderosa pines around kind of block out the day.

Lighting

This photo is purely natural lighting, no flash, nothing but Mr. Sun. The sun could be blazing above but due to the density of the trees there is plenty of shade around to shoot in.

Equipment

I used a Canon 7D with the 100-400 mm L series Canon lens to capture this image. I believe the capture was made at about 150 mm.

Inspiration

This was a photo of opportunity. I happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Editing

I processed the photo in Lightroom, along with Topaz De - Noise. Minimal processing was needed since I got lucky with the capture in the first place.

In my camera bag

I carry usually more than I need. My go to for anything wildlife is the 100 - 400 mm L series Canon lens. I'll also carry a 24 - 105 mm wide lens for mini landscapes I come upon as well as a 50 mm 1.8 prime. I also carry extenders, reduction tubes for micro shots, hands free transmitters, a tripod most important - extra batteries for everything.

Feedback

Slow down and take your time. Stop and listen, stay put for ten minutes. You'll be amazed what you've been walking past.
