Behind The Lens

Location

This is an early example of my photos and was taken while on holiday in Holland near the West Frisian town of Bovenkarspel Netherlands.

Time

It was taken around 0700hrs when I was out for an early morning walk. I just stumbled upon this windmill, unfortunately, because it was early in the morning the visitors centre was closed, so unable to get a look at the inner workings.

Lighting

It was an overcast morning so the light was rather soft. I like the canal and the reflections, your eyes are led to the background by the canal, as well as the main image of the windmill.

Equipment

I took this handheld with a Canon EOS 700D. 1/60 sec at f5 30mm. Just the basics no other kit.

Inspiration

The scene for me showed the serenity of the location and a bygone age. Although now a tourist spot with an adjoining cafe and gift shop, the close vicinity of the road and the canal tell of the working past of the windmill. As I said earlier the canal and the reflection draws you into the image.

Editing

Very little post-processing. Just a touch of exposure adjustment. I prefer to get settings correct at the time of capture. I have two reasons for this. Firstly it saves time not having to wade through loads of pictures. Secondly, I do not enjoy playing with post-production settings, it is better to have more time taking photographs. Also, I am not a graphic artist so it suits me to keep post-production to a minimum.

In my camera bag

I am a bit of 'belt and braces' photographer. Apart from the camera and a kit lens, I always carry 2 or 3 extra lenses. A 50mm and an AF 150-600mm telephoto. Also, I have colour filters, ND filters, external flash, spare batteries, SD card, cleaning cloth and of course a tripod. A rubber lens hood I find invaluable if you see a photo opportunity the other side of a window. A particular occasion I found this useful when on a cruise in rough weather. I was sitting in a lower deck by a window and was able to capture the sea state without reflections from the interior lights. Finally, I always have my Ipad to hand as I have various manuals, articles and tips from other photographers stored on it.

Feedback

The early morning light often gives some of the best lighting conditions. An overcast day should not deter you as this does give rise to interesting conditions. Some of the best opportunities arise from what at first looks mundane. In this case, the windmill on its own would have been just that a windmill. However, encompassing more of the scene and putting the windmill in the right-hand side of the picture allowed the story to be told.
