Location
This photo was taken at Lake Tyers Victoria Australia while on holiday with my husband, three children and our blue staffys on our boat. The boat is only 4.5m in length so quite a cozy fit, we were planning to go fishing. The water was so still and calm perfect conditions. With no former training I learn through my passion for photography and enjoying capturing nature and its surroundings at its finest. I gain experience and learn something new each time I take my camera out.Time
We had just launched our boat and everyone piled in, it was still dark once out on the water the sun began to rise and I seized the opportunity to shoot this magical moment. A balmy summer morning the birds were chirping no breeze with the sound of the water splashing onto the boat. Photographers call this hour of the day the golden hour for good reason, the first and last hour of sunlight. From my experience the images shot in these hours create a sense of immersion and draw the viewer in with the clouds above creating drama and keeping the scene composed.Lighting
With all natural lighting no flash required as the sun started to rise the water glistened and also enhanced the clouds making them glow and refining there shape. Shooting free hand I knelt down and using the edge of the boat to make my horizon as straight as possible while getting as close to the water as possible, using the water as my focal point leading up to the sunset. I wanted people to feel they were sitting on the water looking out.Equipment
I shot with my first and only camera a Canon 600d and a sigma 10-20mm F4-5.6 wide angle lens.Inspiration
I love shooting sunrises there is something about them that is so serene. When taking a photo I always try and capture something unique in this case the water looked so mystical and mesmerizing hence the title. This was my inspiration and everything else fell in place. Overall I want to trigger emotions in people and bring out the beauty in whatever I photograph.Editing
Shooting in raw I use lightroom 6 with limited editing, I aim for my pictures to look as close to the original as possible. I adjusted the white balance and tweaked the colours to make the picture look sharp and polished. In my camera bag
In my bag I carry my Canon 600D, Sigma 10-20mm F4-5.6 for landscape and wide angle shots,Canon 50mm F1.8 prime lens for portrait and close ups and Canon 70-200mm F4 L usm for action, weddings and even macro I found this lens good for with an Inca tripod for long exposures.Feedback
Preparation is key especially when shooting with minimal light sounds obvious but clean your lens and charge your battery the night before. Check weather and times of sunrise and sunset so you don't miss that perfect shot. When shooting on the water weather is so important this could be the difference between a noisy blurred shot or a sharp and impactful photo. Something I learnt change your position and look for interesting features to include in your shot to make it your own. Relax and have fun happy shooting.
