Behind The Lens

Location

This is the Three Gorges Dam in China. The dam stretches across the Yangtze River by the town of Sandouping in the Hubei province.

Time

I don't remember the exact time of day but I do remember it was sometime in the afternoon.

Lighting

I really liked this scene because of the soft lighting in the sky. It was a bit overcast with clouds and there was a haze that is more or less constantly present in many areas of China because of air pollution. Because of this I was able to get these soft muted tones of the afternoon sun.

Equipment

I used my trusty Sony A7R with one of my favorite lenses my Zeiss 16-35mm lens. No tripod was used.

Inspiration

Three Gorges Dam is truly an amazing structure and I would be surprised if anyone is not inspired to take photos of it while they are there. The lighting was also quite beautiful and I would have been out of my mind if I didn't take any shots of this scene.

Editing

Yes, I did post processing because I shoot everything in RAW and the image would be quite flat and bland if I didn't. For this shot I started with Capture One to adjust the basics and then finished with Photoshop for the final touches.

In my camera bag

When I travel I usually like to keep the equipment to a minimum because everything starts to get very heavy after a few days or less. I always use my Sony A7R mirrorless camera. Normally there are three lenses I carry, 16-35mm Zeiss lens, Sony 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 G SSM and Zeiss 55 mm F1.8 lens. Normally I do not bring a tripod with me unless I know I will specifically need it.

Feedback

My best advice is to always have your camera with you and be prepared for anything. Try and frame your shot, but also try and frame it from many different angles and distances. You never know which shot you will like the most. Most important, take many shots. Don't be stingy. You never know which version you will like the best. Sometimes you may be surprised. If I take 20 or 30 shots and I get one or two that I really like I am very happy.
