A beautiful morning sky was forming as I walked out onto my porch, I knew the conditions were favorable for a nice sunrise shot! I drove the mile and a half to the Devils Lake boat launch where I take in many nice sunrises, set up and waited a short bit before being rewarded with this beautiful view! The colors and the lack of wind set this up for the beautiful reflection, the colorful cloud making for a nice "subject"!Time
This picture came about due to my inability to sleep, I suffer from chronic pain and this morning found me in need of stretching, so I walked out onto the porch probably around 6am or so. I hastily dressed as soon as I saw the sky and hurried on down to the launch for this shot! I didn't have to wait long to be rewarded, the cool morning air was a welcome from what would turn into a hot afternoon!Lighting
Sunrise and sunset shots are a favorite of mine, a shot you can experiment with to get your desired capture! For these shots, I prefer to underexpose slightly in order to capture the rich colors and the morning atmosphere, maybe a step or two! These are so much fun to shoot, the sky is a constantly changing piece of art with a kaleidoscope effect and you just never know what to expect from one minute to the next, from one day to the next!Equipment
This was a handheld attempt using my Canon T6i and the Sigma 18-300 mm contemporary lens! Basic equipment for this fairly new wannabe photographer but it gets me out of the house and into life more and more! No flash, no filters, just the basics! As I learn this great hobby, I will pick up new techniques and hope to include filters in the near future though!Inspiration
Mornings are so special; the quiet of the night starts to come alive as the sun lifts her sleepy eyes from her slumber, her warming glow lifting the spirit as she soars higher! I owned a golf course for 31 years and rarely missed a sunrise, some would call that punishing (rising before dawn daily), I called it inspiring! As I am now disabled and retired, I do not get to see as many rises as I would like but life has a way of keeping you hopping and pain often pushes me out of bed early. Some mornings I can still function and luckily, this was one of those mornings!! The morning air, the singing birds, the soft breeze and a beautiful view are all the inspiration one needs!Editing
I am a very simple photographer and thus, my processing skills are simple and lacking! I did a little tweaking, lightened the background a bit since shooting underexposed will make some parts of the shot too dark, gave the color saturation a little nudge because shooting in raw leaves the shot a touch bland! All in all, not much was really needed and that is another reason I love sunrise/sunset shots, for their simplicity! In my camera bag
In my bag....well, as a fairly new photographer, I have the basics that came with the Canon T6i bundle I found at Sam's Club (kit 2 lens set, T6i body, carrying case etc) and have slowly added as I could afford! I now have a 50 mm prime and my go to lens, the Sigma 18-300 mm contemporary lens, the Sigma has been the lens on the body since I bought it! I love not having to carry extra lenses as I am disabled and carrying stuff is not overly friendly to this body, the 18-300 gives a great range and is crisp, a great lens for the price! Of course, I would love to own one of the "L" series Canon lenses like the EF 100-400mm F4.5-5.6L IS II USM, one of these days!!Feedback
To capture the perfect sunrise shot, you will need the desire to rise before the sun BUT not every morning will produce a nice sunrise and even mornings that seem favorable can be disappointing! Rising early often will help to understand just what conditions lend to the best sunrises; clouds are almost always key but so is wind speed if shooting for reflection like this! A slight breeze might add a slight ripple and help or it might work against you but a heavier wind usually means stay in bed! Location is also key, find the perfect location that offers the sun rising over the water, a good break in the background such as the opposite shoreline will help to separate sky from water! It may take a little experimenting and a lot of early mornings awake and watching but the reward is well worth the effort!
