We drove 10+ hours down to Stonefort Illinois, no hotel reservations, no camping equipment, just our cameras and a hopes the weather would reward us. No traffic as we got in around 9pm Sunday night but after trying to get to a remote waterfall in the Shawnee National Forest, we were well aware the woods were chock full of eclipse seekers like us and we were worried we would even find a place to set up.
We drove on down the dirt road a ways finding a spot and took night shots before sacking out, we were happy. TONS of traffic all night and the whole day leading up to totality, parties everywhere...and cops LOL Weather stated thunderstorms by 2pm and a heat index warning of 105 by noon...it made that 105!! Clouds wee spotty and menacing but never came into play, we were blessed with an awesome sky for the event.
Storms came on the way home, large hail and blinding rain, I'm sure we were very near a tornado....
