Each year spider crabs mass in the shallow waters of Port Phillip Bay in south-eastern Australia to shed their old shells. While they wait for their shiny new exoskeletons to harden they are extremely vulnerable to predation and adopt the age old approach of safety in numbers. As the sun dipped towards the horizon, large smooth rays emerged from the gloom. The rays would glide over the crabs, flattening out the piles and separating the cast until they found a recently moulted individual and then it was soft shell crab for supper.
