Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was shot less than a mile from my home. I have always been intrigued by the fog and on this particular morning, the fog lingered longer. I always grab my camera when I walk the dog, hoping to get a shot like this. On this day, Dublin Park in Madison, Alabama was a mysterious yet calming subject and I managed to snap this photo as the morning sun pushed its way higher into the late summer sky.

Time

This photo was taken at about 8:00 AM. I had dropped the kids off at school and was afraid I would miss the fog as it normally burns off well before eight. On this day, the fog and the park and the light seemed to wait for me and I was caught in a perfect moment that will never be seen again.

Lighting

I didn't have a lot of time to think about the lighting in this shot. I had been shooting fog in the area for months and I knew that it could dissolve quickly. When I looked at the shot, I wanted to bounce light off of the wet pavement and also catch rays coming through the background.

Equipment

I used my back-up camera, a Canon 450D with a standard lens and no tripod. I really didn't expect to catch this shot or I would have grabbed the tripod and one of my better cameras. Honestly, this shot taught me a valuable lesson: the perfect scene can happen anywhere at anytime and you need to always be ready. Since then, I don't leave home without a tripod and, at the least, my Canon 750D.

Inspiration

The fog and the bench inspired me. I had shot this bench dozens of times and I had shot in the fog of this park a dozen more. But I had never had the chance to shoot both.

Editing

The only post-processing I did on this was to turn it into a black and white photo. It was color but, to be honest, the fog and lighting didn't make the colors too brilliant so I simply changed it to black and white and ran with it.

In my camera bag

Well, I am now on assignment in Alaska so my backpack when I hike in the Denali National Park consists of a very inexpensive tripod that I can also use as a hiking stick, a Canon 750D, a standard Canon 18mm-55mm lens, a Tamron 70mm-300mm lens, several batteries, extra memory cards, plenty of lens cleaner wipes and bear spray.

Feedback

Be ready. Always be ready. Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote: "To the attentive eye, each moment of the year has it's own beauty. And in the same fields, it beholds, every hour, a picture which has never been seen before and which shall never be seen again". Always be ready.
