Location
This as shot in my studio, which is basically an office floor in Rijswijk, Near The Hague in The Netherlands.Time
I met up with the model (AriaRainbow, Model Mayhem # 3786685) on a summer evening in the studio for trying some light blaster projections.Lighting
The only light source is a light blaster, which needs to be placed away from the camera in order to create the depth. By doing so, 3D shapes (like a woman's body) are emphasised.Equipment
I used a light blaster with a compact flash (Yongnuo 560 III), a glass gobo and a canon lens (18-55mm). It helps to use a faster lens, as the flash is constantly firing at maximum power. The camera was a Nikon D800 with a Tamron 24-70. The flash was triggered by a Yongnuo 560TX.Inspiration
This specific shoot was organised to produce an advertisement for my website (UnTill-photography.com). I'd like to think it worked.Editing
Conversion to black and white, otherwise some fine-tuning of contrast, exposure and clarity. No layers. In my camera bag
For a studio shoot I usually use a Nikon D800 with either a Nikon 85mm, Tamron 24-70mm or Tamron 70-200mm. Further various radio triggers, remote releases, batteries, model releases.Feedback
It helps to clearly describe the project to your model, as it is not an everyday shoot for them. The light-blaster needs to be manually focused on your model, which is not an easy task without a permanent light source (it's a compact flash after all). It's a bit of an awkward moment when you seem to be staring at her for the focusing, so better explain ahead what you are doing. Every-time the model's position or the light-blaster's position is changed, the light-blaster needs to be refocused. The Light Blaster is a cool device. You can insert either your own framed slides or those sold online for it. I ordered a specially made glass gobo for advertising my website "UnTill-photography.com". The light Blaster works with canon lenses (or Nikon with an adaptor), but does not lock the lens. As you have to manually focus the lens, it may happen that the lens falls off, so be careful. The flash will typically fire at maximum power and may get hot, make sure you bring enough batteries. using a fast lens on the light blaster helps too.
