The story of this insects life cycle is incredible. This is the skeleton, if you will, of the larvae, or the skin of the newly freed adult! Left behind when the adult emerged to begin its extremely short life, before it burrows into the earth to lay it's eggs. And the cycle continues.

The adult cicadia is only alive fir 4-6 weeks, in which time it mates. When it's mating has been done, the female burrows in the earth at the base of a tree and lays her eggs. Thirteen to seventeen years later, the larvae will emerge from the earth, climb up the nearest tree(usually) and break free as an adult cicadia. Only to fly around for 6-8 weeks. Then the cycle begins again.
