During monsoon season in Arizona we get cloud formations like this and rain that comes down to cause flash floods. This was taken above Round Valley in the White Mountains I was at about 9,000' at the time at an overlook off of Big Lake Road.

Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken from the overlook off of Hwy 263, it over looks what is called Round Valley. The mountains I was on are the White Mountains in Arizona, middle eastern side of the state. The hills are dormant volcanoes, there are approximately 500 dormant volcanoes in this are. Where I was standing at the overlook is part of a mountain range that is volcanic in origin. The foreground is a volcanic ridge just below the overlook.

Time

Early evening, to the left of the photo the sun was setting behind a group of mountains which are also dormant volcanoes.

Lighting

The light was provided by the setting sun.

Equipment

Canon 6D with a 28-135mm lens, hand held.

Inspiration

The beauty of the scene. The sunsets here in Arizona are some of the most spectacular I have ever seen.

Editing

In PS using TopazLabs Detail I sharpened and added contrast as well as lightened the shadows, then Clarity for a bit more contrast.

In my camera bag

Canon 6D and 60D, 28-135mm lens, 50mm macro lens, 150-600mm lens, monopod, two tripods, electronic flash, extension tubes, ND filters, UV filters, remote shutter release, reflectors, and the usual batteries etc.

Feedback

If you know there are clouds or rain nearby find a spot from where you can observe and capture the sunset hitting the clouds. Many times it is just have your camera ready as you may drive up on such a scene at anytime. I always carry my camera with the rest of my gear in the back of my Jeep even just going to the store, living in the mountains you never know what you will see. I've had a herd of over 400 elk cross the road in front of me, another time 11 bull elk crossed the road in front of us and then stop to eat on the other side of the road, got some great shots of that.
