Congratulations on being People’s Choice in my Vintage Item-Vintage Look challenge. The tones and blur gives it a great vintage look as if the image was taken in the era of the typewriter. Fabulous!

This image was taken in my home studio. I love playing around with ideas that pop into my head - being an intense hobbyistTime
I love mornings! Most of the world is still sleeping in and even though I live in a city there is a certain quiet that lends itself to creativity. The hub bub of the day, cell phones and emails can just wait. The night before I had come up with the idea of using my Grandfather's old typewriter in this image so I headed up to my studio to play and workLighting
The light was all natural western window light. Where I shoot has three large windows: a northern one with soft light anytime, a southern which primarily lights the room, and a western facing one that offers stronger but still not harsh light in the mornings through late mid-day. This window is my favoriteEquipment
I am a Sony guy when it comes to digital - from my first 4 meg in underwater housing to my current A7Rm2. A Zeiss 24/240 that almost never leaves the camera is useful for macro and useful for the picking out faces in a crowd or flattening a background in actor's head shots. For this shot, I had the camera on a tripod and used a timed shutter release to get the sharpest image I couldInspiration
Long ago I was in the stage play, "Sleuth". A play where the main character is a writer of mysteries, perhaps gone to seed as they say. Now retired and doing acting again, I wanted to be in the play again since the part of Andrew is an older gentleman. I had a director, and co-star, stage management, lighting and what I needed was a venue. This shot was for my talk with the venue folks. Being all involved are creatives and romantics - the combination of a thought provoking haunting image, a keyboard that speaks to the title and the flavor of the vintage term for detection, and the shallow depth of field drawing you in seemed perfect for the pitch and a tribute to my Grandfather;s love of mystery novelsEditing
I post processed in Photoshop cc. I used both foggy night and edgy amber in the LUT (look up tables) to get the vintage color I envisioned. To accentuate the DOF, I created a copy of the file, selected Gaussian Blur and then masked out where it needed it. To achieve the letters in the right order and location, I used the elliptical marquee tool to select, copy and move them to their new location. In my camera bag
I carry my Sony A7Rm2 & the Zeiss 24/240 just about everywhere with me. When going to an important event, I also take my Sony A7m2 with a native nifty fifty. I take a tripod in the car but it rarely gets used, Same with a polarizing filter. I always have extra batteries and memory cards I ravel light so to flexible.Feedback
To get macro soft light images, I recommend natural light over flash. You can SEE what you will be getting. Daydream with silly ideas about something that would be fun to have and then play around trying to get it. You will get better the more you try stuff. You do not have to be perfect - you do have to try. Photography is creating. If you did not have that longing inside yourself, you would not be a photographer. As it is said, "The meaning of life is in the verb 'seeing' "Open your eyes, open your heart, open your whimsy, and open you lens. Good hunting!
