Behind The Lens

Location

Photo was taken at False Creek in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Time

Around 6:30pm +/- 1/2 hour.

Lighting

Available light only and a long exposure with a UV filter.

Equipment

Nikon D750 with a Nikkor AF lens stopped at F/22 all set on a Manfroto tripod.

Inspiration

I sought out the Telus World of Science building because of its shape and lighting features.

Editing

Yes with PaintShop Pro Ultimate. As I recall, given the time of night the photo was captured, it needed very little in colour enhancement. Still I did add some saturation.

In my camera bag

Normally I carry a Nikon D850, a Nikkor 24-120mm f/4 lens, a Sigma 12-24mm f/4 wide angle lens, and a Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 or a Sigma 105mm Macro, the choice between these last two lenses is dependent on the type of photography I anticipate doing that day. I generally like to travel light so I don't carry my long lens nor do I carry my tripod unless I anticipate using either that day.

Feedback

Ignore the light meter and do bracketed long time exposures starting at thirty seconds then 1 minute, 2 minutes, etc. Also be aware that the longer the exposure the longer it will take the camera to process the image before you can see it on the camera screen. If you are not carrying your tripod and hare antivibration equipment allow long exposures and shoot anyway. I have hand held my D750 and D850 and managed successful exposures at as low a shutter speed as 1/10 of a second. Be aware that modern camera computer programming does not allow exposures under a shutter speed setting that is the inverse of the focal length. So if you require a focal length of 120mm the lowest shutter speed the programming will allow will be 1/125 of a second.
