Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my home in Bexhill, where I have a lighting set up and several different backdrops.

Time

This shot was taken late morning, although this style of shooting, which relies on artificial lighting sources is less time (and more importantly weather sensitive.

Lighting

This shot was taken with two main lights set at just over head height and each side of me, I didn't want to illuminate the backdrop as I wanted Rebecca to really stand out. I don't often use this set up as I prefer some shadow in my shots, but for this set I went for this set up as a change.

Equipment

Nikon D5200, 28mm lens, two screened permanent lights, and a black backdrop was all that was needed for this shot.

Inspiration

Rebecca obviously has stunning tattoos, and I wanted to make full use of them, also as part of her stage sets she often puts tape on to cover up, i wanted to make use of the tattoos, and also take the tape scenario further, this not only made for an interesting and slightly different image, but also makes it 'safe' for social media.

Editing

I do very little post processing, so with this shot it would be a little bit of sharpness and contrast.

In my camera bag

I have actually just changed my kit bag, so I now nearly always carry at least one speedlight, which I will use as a fill flash more than for direct lighting, a 40 mm macro lens, a 12 inch reflector, spare batteries, a notebook and generally my 70-300 macro lens. I find I can usually cover all bases with this selection on kit.

Feedback

I initially found this lighting set up by trial and error, now whilst it's always useful to seek advice, or search online or in books, it always pays to play around with your own set ups, as very often the kit the experts are showing you is nothing like the kit you have, so never be afraid to experiment. During shoots after getting a good selection of shots that I know work, I will always try something different, then if it doesn't work I haven't wasted the whole shoot, if it does I have a new technique to expand on.
