This photo was taken in our backyard in San Antonio, TX. I've always loved hummingbirds and a few years ago I decided to put out some feeders. Then it was wait, wait, and wait. But if you put them out, they will come. We now have 5-6 hummers that visit us throughout the summer. My wife and I will sit outside (in the 90-100+ degree heat) and just watch them.Time
This was late in the evening, around 7:30 PM on June 2, 2017. It was still light out but it was going away fast. I was trying my best to get some good photos of the hummers. I took a lot of photos that night and only a few were keepers.Lighting
The sun was going down and I knew I was going to needs some help so I added a flash on the side to get the shot. I can't take credit for lighting bu this bird wanted me to take her photo, so I did.Equipment
I only have one DSLR and that is a Canon T5i that my father bought for me a few years ago. I was using the kit telephoto lens, EF75-300, set at 1/200, f/9, 140mm, ISO 400. The flash is a Canon speedlite 430EX II and a manfrotto tripod.Inspiration
Have you ever looked out and seen something beautiful fly by? Imagine looking out and seeing a hummingbird floating in the air looking back at you. Then slowly (for a hummingbird) turn sideways, it was as if she was telling me to take her photo. As I said in the caption of the photo, practice, practice, practice. I still am practicing take their photos. They will always be an inspiration to me.Editing
I used Lightroom to adjust the photo and to crop the photo. To be honest, I didn't spend a lot of time on the post-processing. It has been a year now since I took the photo, I've learned a lot more about bring out the colors and I may do some more post-processing on it. This also needs, yep, practice, practice, practice. In my camera bag
I now have the Canon 80D along with my T5i. I have a number of Canon and Tamron lenses in my bag along with some filters and cleaning supplies.Feedback
Practice, practice, practice. Be patient, bring a good drink, take a sip, relax, and wait but be ready as you never know when they will be flying by.
