Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the end of an indoor photoshoot, to get a change of style we headed along the road to Manor Barn Gardens here in Bexhill, I have used this location a few times, so am always confident of getting some good shots, but also know where I'd like to push the boundaries of what I've taken before, that I did with this shot, as it was such a bright day the setting just screamed high contrast monochrome, fortunately I listened to those screams and this is the result.

Time

The shot was taken at around 1pm, the heat of the midday sun, I know that's a bit of a rule breaker, but for high contrast shots it works brilliantly.

Lighting

Obviously outdoors and bright sunlight, so the only thing I had to do was get the model to pose and then work my angles to get the shot I wanted, fortunately she did brilliantly.

Equipment

Nikon D5200 body with a Nikon DX 55-200 zoom lens, no other equipment used.

Inspiration

I do like high contrast black and white shots, the bright day and the the effect that light had on the stonework led to me thinking about this shot. The models great figure and long legs meant this pose really suited her.

Editing

Not much post processing on this one, other than turning it monochrome, up the sharpness, up the contrast and protect some of the highlights, other than that nothing else, editing took less than 20 seconds.

In my camera bag

One flashgun (usually to use as a fill), 40mm macro, 28mm and a 70-300 zoom, spare batteries and a memory card. I find a notebook very useful, not only to jot down details of shots, but also if I get any enquiries whilst I'm out shooting.

Feedback

With all monochrome shots I always say, shoot it for monochrome, don't just shoot a shot and then try your luck converting it to see how it comes out. I personally like highly contrasted monochrome, so if I see the opportunity I will shoot several high contrast shots specifically for conversion into monochrome.
