We attended the funeral of a friend at Arlington. My husband and I were asked to be the official photographers. It is a beautiful, moving ceremony. No photos of the family and friends will be shared here, but the ceremonial aspects will be. The ceremony is very private; onlookers are kept well away.

The ceremony took place in the early afternoon.Lighting

Paul's daughter, Carolyn, was my first friend when we moved to our town in 1977.We met in ballet class. Her parents quickly became friends; my husband and I were between the parents and Carolyn in ages. We have been close through weddings, birth of children and divorces. When Paul passed away, there was no question we would attend the funeral at Arlington. Carolyn told her mother we would be honored to be the official photographers, sparing the family the expense.The flag folding ceremony is an integral part of the funeral. It is beautifully choreographed and executed.Editing

This is a solemn ceremony on hallowed ground. Respect for the deceased, the family, the military members conducting the ceremony and the resting places of all the others surrounding you is essential. Be aware of where you are, and be as inconspicuous as possible I was still a participant in the ceremony. Shooting through prayers, in my opinion, is not an option. This was an incredible experience.
