Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo through the double-paned window looking out into our backyard in Swift Current, Saskatchewan.

Time

I shot this photo at 3:28 PM CST (2013 January 19).

Lighting

This was photographed through the double-paned window looking into our backyard on an overcast day after a fresh snowfall.

Equipment

I shot this photo hand-held with my point-and-shoot camera - a Nikon COOLPIX P510 V1.0. The camera was set for automatic. The settings the camera automatically used for this photo were f/4.8 1/500 sec ISO 400 Automatic White Balance, Exposure 0 step, focal length 350mm, Pattern Metering.

Inspiration

I am a birder and also love nature in general. I especially love the little Nuttall's Cottontails (aka 'bush bunnies' as I've always known them). I am always trying to get a half decent photo of them -- and usually that means shooting through the (more often than not dirty) double-paned windows so as not to scare them. These little rabbits are a joy to see and watch as they go about the neighbourhood.

Editing

This photograph is right out of the camera, shot in JPEG format. I did not do any post-processing (but I know now I likely should have done some.)

In my camera bag

I have my Nikon D750, D200 and D5100 cameras in my bags along with my Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II,a Tamron SP 24-70MM F/2.8 Di VC USD, a Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD Lens, Nikon f/2.8 105mm Micro f/2.8 lens, and a Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary Lens. I also always have my Samsung S8+ SM-6955W cellular phone with me (I like to use it when I want or need a wider angle photo.) If I am going to go for a drive to spend some time out and about shooting, I like to take all my cameras and lenses... you just never know what you're going to need. If I am going out to shoot something specific, I take my Nikon D750 along with the 70-200mm lens, 24-70mm lens, and depending what my shooting goal is, sometimes the 105mm lens.

Feedback

My advice for others is to keep your batteries charged up, keep your camera(s) handy (you never know when an opportunity to shoot will arise), and to appreciate everything around you and to always look for photo opportunities. Then shoot, shoot, shoot.... shoot as often as you can. Look for photo opportunities everywhere including in your own home and/ or yard... even if you have to shoot through the window (this could be an incentive to try to keep your windows clean.) We have some treasures in our own yards we don't often think of photographing. Try to take advantage of the lighting - when it is sunny or when it is cloudy or if rain or any other weather system is moving in, and play with your f stops. Take more than one photo... you can always delete them if they do not turn out. I shot this photograph in "Auto mode" with a point-and-shoot camera that was handy (I keep it within reaching distance beside the window so if birds, rabbits, or squirrels show up, I can quickly turn on the camera and have a chance of getting a decent capture of them.) If I have a similar opportunity, I would use one of my DSLR's, and take time to better compose the photo. When you are shooting, my advice is to also try different camera settings and lenses. My most important advice of all is to pick up your camera and go out and have fun!!
