These made me think of totem poles. I was attracted to their textures and the opportunity to make an image that used vertical repetition as its main design element (variation within repetition). Also there is the whole personal element of associations with deeper things like age, death, that gives this a level of meaning that the viewer feels even if only at a subconscious level. Old, but still standing.
