Behind The Lens

Location

I see photography as my companion in life - so my camera was with me whilst making a housecall with my wife to babysit this little chap.

Time

This was indoors late afternoon - so a diffuse backlighting. The dynamic range of my camera's sensor meant I could shoot without flash yet still balance the inside and outside light levels.

Lighting

I had the inside lights switched off as I knew my sensore could capture the dynamic range and this meant there would be no trouble balancing the colour temperature of different light sources.

Equipment

This was with my D700 (I've stepped up to the D750 now, there's some great second hand deals on these) and my favourite lens - 105mm f/2.8 micro-nikkor; one of the sharpest lenses I have ever used.

Inspiration

He's an earnest critter isn't he? I want my photography to represent the mundane, the everyday - to recognise normal as beautiful. This little chap is demonstrating such strength of character, force of personality, how could I not take his photo?

Editing

The main need was a curves adjustment to expand the shadow tones so that the inside & outside light-levels were better balanced.

In my camera bag

Honestly if you need a bag you're creating barriers for yourself. With all the will in the world you will find there are days when you just can't face, or even manage, to lug your kit bag around with you - so you leave it at home and you're not a photographer that day. I used to shoot with a Leica IIIb and a collapsible summicron which slid into my jacket pocket. I was 'with camera' every single day then. The D750 and 2 lenses I use now (105mmm micro-nikkor and 17-35mm 2x f/4 VR zoom) are much bigger than the old leica so I do leave them at home sometimes; but I rarely carry anything more. I have circular polarisers on both lenses.

Feedback

Animals, you just got to be on their level - shoot laying on your belly. The whole point of photography is to show us things we otherwise wouldn't get to see; that doesn't mean exotic locations, but it does mean unusual viewpoints
