Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on our way to Lamar Valley in Yellowstone National Park on a very cold and snowy day on April 18, 2017

Time

I know that it was early in the morning probably around 9 am when most of the animals in the park that are out are looking for food.

Lighting

This day was very overcast and cloudy and that is why I was using such a high ISO of 6400. I didn't want any blur if I could help it so I shot at 1/1000

Equipment

All of my photos are done with a Canon T6s and this particular photo was done hand held and a 75-300 Canon lens all natural light.

Inspiration

My passion is wildlife photography and we going to Yellowstone as often as we can during the off season and before and after the road closures. I have taken hundreds of photos of the buffalo there and I am always looking for that one shot that really makes the photo. I was inspired by the way they were walking right down the middle of the road as if to say we are here and this is our territory so don't mess with us. Once they got past us we proceeded on our way.

Editing

This is pretty much exactly what came out of the camera except changing it to black and white which I think really helped this situation

In my camera bag

My equipment consists of a Canon T6s and canon lenses 17-55mm and 75-300 and a Tamron 150-600 a nest tripod full set of ND filters, magnifying lenses for macro.

Feedback

Always be ready, I don't know how many times I have driven up on something that I think would make a really good photo just to realize that I don't have my camera ready and when that happens I usually miss the shot. If shooting wildlife while traveling find come common settings that will apply to most conditions so you will have a fair chance of getting a usable photo. If I know there is a good chance for wildlife activity I will drive with my camera in my lap. Be safe and be ready.
