Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photograph at Lake Matheson on the South Island of New Zealand.

Time

Approximately 10:00 am

Lighting

Since I took this photograph in good sunlight, the main issue I needed to deal with was getting an even exposure of the sky as compared with the water. To achieve this, I used a Lee graduated neutral density filter.

Equipment

I used a Canon Mark 5 D III camera body, with a 24-70 mm f/2.8 lens, a polarizer filter and a Lee graduated neutral density filter, as well as a tripod.

Inspiration

I live in Pasadena California, USA. My husband and I did a lot of planning for our trip to New Zealand. My number one top photo that I wanted to take was if Lake Matheson, so I studied extensively before going to New Zealand. I figured out the exact point around the lake was the best to capture this shot, I figured out the best time to get the shot and the best equipment to use. I also studied other photos of the location. I was fortunate to get clear skies and very still water the day of my shoot. I was told that the day before a group of professional photographers were not able to get any shots at all due to poor weather.

Editing

I did not need to do much in post-processing. I took out some dust spots and a few stray leaves.

In my camera bag

I usually carry my Canon Mark 5 III camera body and two lenses. Depending on what type of shoot it is, it could be a Tamron 150mm-600mm and 24mm-70mm f/2.8 lens (for a safari shoot) or 70-20mm f/2.8 mm and 16-24mm f/2.8mm (for landscape) or 100mm macro. I make sure to have polarizer filters, neutral density filters, extra batteries, extra compact flash cards, micro cleaning cloth, tripod and remote shutter release cable.

Feedback

Study the area you want to photograph as much as you can. The more information you are armed with in advance, the better chance you will have of getting a successful photo.
