The photo was taken in my kitchen next to a window. I'm a self taught photographer and always looking to push myself and explore new styles of photography!Time
It was in the afternoon on a cloudy day. This really gave me soft light coming through the window that lit the space perfectly.Lighting
The soft light coming through the window was really helpful in creating the mood I was looking for. I also used a white reflector to bounce light on the other side of the cake to create a more even tone through out the image.Equipment
This was a very "at home" set up using my Nikon D610. I used natural light and a reflector (and a candle on top of the cake). The set up is a bamboo cutting board for the base and an old baking sheet for the backdrop.Inspiration
I mean, look at that ice cream cake!! But it was more born out of a desire to explore food photography and push myself to learn new styles.Editing
Yes, I worked on the saturation and levels of the black tones to create a little more moody feel. I wanted the cake, a symbol of celebration, to feel very isolated. A really nice contrast in mood.In my camera bag
I always travel with my Nikon D610 and 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. Usually an on camera flash and a few filters but that's about it. I tend to take a minimalist approach to my gear and focus on the basics of photography!Feedback
Be aware of the light and use what's available to you. This image could have been taken on any camera, including a cell phone. It's all about being creative and having fun!
