This image was inspired by the history of Lake Erie. One of the five great lakes in America. However, it was considered a dead lake in the 60's, but has since made a remarkable come back. I found this piece of driftwood on the beach and set up the shot to show the incredible ability mother nature has to repair herself.

Location
This photo was taken on Lake Erie in Geneva Ohio, about 1 mile from where I grew up.Time
I took many photos over the course of 3 hours to capture this one image. This image was taken around 9pm on a bitter cold day.Lighting
I used mostly natural light. However, I did use a high powered LED flashlight to do a little light painting on the drift wood.Equipment
Nikon D5100 and a Tamron 10-24mm. The Tripod... A few rocks I stacked on top of one another. Thank you mother earth!Inspiration
Lake Erie was almost considered a dead lake many years ago. People would dump all of their wast and garbage into the lake. Over the past 30 years, there have been many efforts to clean the lake up. I grew up playing in this lake. I wanted to capture the rough history. I used the dead piece of driftwood to represent the brutal history of this lake, and the long exposure of beating waves to represent the lakes resilience.Editing
Yes. I used Adobe Lightroom to convert the image to BW. I also used photoshop to adjust the levels a tad as well as do a touch of dodging and burning. In my camera bag
I have a very basic set up as I am just getting more serious about photography. At the moment I have a Nikon D5100, Tamron 10-24mm, Nikkor 50mm f/1.4, Nikkor 85mm f/1.8, and the kit Nikkor 18-55mm. I always keep a high powered LED Flashlight on me.Feedback
Take your time. Arrive at your destination well before your ideal light hits and stay a while after. And most importantly, don't be afraid to get a little dirty.
